The craziness of Indian Politics

So, Indian politics is going back to the stone age. If hate politics and identity politics wasn't enough, a recent manifesto of a major political party talks about abolishing English in education and the use of computers on any new projects! Its saddening to see that just to attract the votes of naive and comparatively ill informed rural voters, a group of seasoned politicians have chosen to take the most regressive route possible. The argument, I understand is that while the urban class is obviously benefiting from the ability to communicate in a global English and by being techno-savvy, the rural population in our cow belt don't have access to education post 8th grade. I see this manifesto as a classic case of treating the symptoms and not the root cause. I've depicted some of the things I feel are root causes for unemployment in the mind map here (in the absence of a good tool to draw a fishbone). If those are the root causes, then how does stopping the foray of India into the information age help? To solve the problem of unemployment populist measures in the Hindi heartland can't help. The governments need to speed up industrialization in rural areas and B and C town. Agricultural support needs to improve, to help our most ancient profession - farmers need electricity and new technology. Government projects need to speed up -- pushing projects into litigation just because the previous government initiated them has hurt employment in a big way. The skill gaps in the talent pool need to be bridged by providing professional training in English, in law, medicine, engineering, science, commerce, arts, et all. Our education system needs reform by ensuring 100% literacy, especially for the girl child. Unfortunately the politicians of this party are not far sighted enough to think of systemic solutions to a systemic problem. So if these measures are brought into effect, all that'll happen is that people will lose out on the few job opportunities that are available to them and because of the lack of computerization, industrialization will slow down even further. As a consequence the rate of employment generation will slow down as well. Government projects will suffer as well as will the opportunities for people to avail higher education, given that these courses need a reasonable command over the English language.

Well anyways, I'm quite tired of politicians resorting to their mindless rhetoric and unscientific agendas to paint a picture of their efficiency. As it turns out, most agendas seem to highlight the inadequacies of their opponents instead of building a well thought out agenda of their own. The most communal party in the country defends its fascist political strategy by using the 20 odd year old wrongs of its opponents as justification for its actions. This strategy will obviously have short term gains attached. This however is pretty easy to defeat - all that the opponent needs to do, is get its own act straight and thereafter, you have no agenda. The "compete with your own self" ideology rings so clear in my head each time I think of this. Its pointless politics to justify your mistakes by pointing out the mistakes of your opponents. Its meaningful politics to talk about development, to abandon persona-bashing, to condemn hatred of any kind and to recognize your own mistakes and work towards setting them right. I wish the next generation of politicians can understand and highlight the issues of development in our country and that sooner than later, we'll build a generation of constructive politics in our country.

True. Indian Politics has become a "you did it, I will do it" rhetoric. No issues are discussed threadbare, and only one issue is always highlighted.

I also feel the media is partly to blame too. If only the media highlighted many more young leaders than just Rahul and Priyanka, we would have had more hope about the future.

I've been writing a lot of these elections too, and feel that these elections will not usher in the sea change we are wishing for,
